The Tesla Powerwall has taken the solar world by storm. When people talk solar and they immediately jump to, “Tesla Powerwall – I need a battery, too” And although we appreciate the spotlight Tesla has brought onto the world of solar power and solar energy storage solutions, it is important to recognize that the Tesla Powerwall is only one solution in a growing variety of residential energy storage options.
What is Solar Battery Storage?
There are many ways in which solar energy can be stored, but currently only two basic practices for homeowners. There are two basic types of battery storage. The traditional energy storage that most people are already connected to and dependent on is the electrical grid. When your solar panels produce more electricity than you use, the excess energy goes back into the system. Most people do not really consider this “storage” because it really is not storing the energy for you, as the homeowners, to use. You do benefit with your meter rolling backwards, which does help defray costs. However, the grid does store overproduced electrical energy and acts like a free battery but does not store the energy for the homeowner.
The other option that homeowners have if they are looking for an independent storage solution, is the use of a residential solar battery. As panels produce more energy than a household can use in the minute, the excess sun power is used to hold the energy for use during the night or on cloudy days. Additionally, energy stored in batteries can also be discharged during On-Peak times. This reduces the demand on the grid and reduces dependence on On-Peak pricing.
Why Battery Storage?
Most simply put, adding energy storage to your residential solar system “future proofs” a solar array. This means that even as Time -Of-Use hours or Peak Pricing come into play, extra energy your home solar installation produced will be stored in a battery. The battery can then be discharged to manage your home’s energy usage. Solar batteries really allow a homeowner to maximize the use they get out of the electricity generated by their solar panels. Additionally, solar batteries can provide back-up power without producing greenhouse gas emissions and allow you to run your home off solar energy in the event the energy grid goes down.
The Phazr Advantage
Since the Tesla Powerwall has taken so much of the limelight for solar battery solutions, we think that it is important to remind people that not all solar panels work on the same battery system. Most panels do not work with the Tesla Powerwall. But, there are many more solutions.
One exciting battery storage system is from Phazr Battery from JLM Energy. The Phazr battery has “plug-and-play” capabilities for installation and takes the cake for simple installation. Additionally, the patented symmetric DC regulation technology means that the battery has higher efficiencies. It is considered an Advanced Energy Storage Solution is it has the capacity to back-up essential energy loads in the case of a power outage or disconnect from the energy grid, has incredibly low maintenance demands due to there being no single point of failure and is capable of serving homes that are completely off the grid. Furthermore, the Phazr Advantage gives homeowners complete protection and control over energy storage with an industry-leading warranty.
Other advantages of having a battery is that it protects you against rate increases with the utility as you can control the energy you are storing. It also offers a buffer for life style changes. The addition of babies or other dependents moving in, the installation of a pool or even the addition of an electric car can increase a home’s energy use. An addition of a battery allows for your energy production to truly be optimized.
The best strategy to determine if your home is an ideal candidate for solar power is to contact one of our Energy Advisers.
